Definition
►What is epic poetry?
An epic poem is a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily
concerning a serious subject containing details of heroic deeds and events significant
to a culture or nation. Milman Parry
and Albert
Lord have argued that the Homeric epics, the earliest
works of Western literature, were fundamentally an oral poetic form. These
works form the basis of the epic genre in Western literature. Nearly all
Western epic self-consciously presents itself as a continuation of the
tradition begun by these poems. Classical epic employs dactylic
hexameter and recounts a journey, either physical or mental or both.
Epics also tend to highlight cultural norms and to define or call into question
cultural values, particularly as they pertain to heroism.
►What is tragedy?
Tragedy is a form of drama based on human suffering that invokes
an accompanying catharsis or pleasure in audiences. While many cultures
have developed forms that provoke this paradoxical
response, the term tragedy often refers to a specific tradition
of drama that has played a unique and important role historically in the
self-definition of Western civilisation. That tradition has been multiple and
discontinuous, yet the term has often been used to invoke a powerful effect of cultural
identity and historical continuity—"the Greeks
and the Elizabethans, in one cultural form; Hellenes and Christians, in a common activity," as Raymond Williams
puts it.
►What is genre?
A genre is any form or type of
communication in any mode with socially-agreed upon conventions developed over
time. Genre is most popularly known as a category of literature, music, or other forms of
art or entertainment, whether written or spoken, audio or visual, based on
some set of stylistic criteria, yet genres can be aesthetic,
rhetorical, communicative, or functional. Genres form by
conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old
ones is discontinued. Often, works fit into multiple genres by way of borrowing
and recombining these conventions. Stand alone texts, works, or pieces of
communication may have individual styles, but genres are amalgams of these
texts based on agreed upon or socially inferred conventions. Some genres may be
rigid with strictly adhered to guidelines while others may be very flexible.
►What is antihero?
An antihero, is a protagonist who lacks conventional heroic qualities such as idealism, courage, or morality. These characters are usually considered "conspicuously contrary to an archetypal hero".
